March 17- April 4

Congrats to all of us, we've made it through another New York winter! Day Light Savings has kicked in...the days are getting longer...Spring is here, and all its glory will soon be revealing itself. Along with the new season comes a cleaner sleeker "new look" for both the newsletter and website. Drop us an email and let us know what you think.
My good friend Doug invited me to join him at the GLAAD Media Awards, as always the event was magical. Joy Behar was presented with the Excellence in Media Award. In her acceptance speech she expressed her appreciation to the GLBT community for our support beginning in her earliest days of stand-up, on a less serious note she was absolutely hilarious!
Alan Cummings presented Cynthia Nixon with the Vito Russo Award. She was eloquent and urged all of us to join "FightBackNY". The organization's one and only goal is to defeat anti-equality New York State Senators and to replace anti-equality senators with pro-equality senators.
The audience was brought to their feet from an unexpected source....an 11-year-old boy from Arkansas, Will Phillips. CNN received the Outstanding TV Journalism Segment Award for "Why Will Won't Pledge Allegiance". Will Phillips refused to participate in saying the Pledge Allegiance at school because he feels the line "Liberty and Justice for All" isn't true.
Will's speech was articulate, powerful and for an 11 year old spoken well beyond his years. Go to GetEQUAL, to hear Will talk about how we all need to take risks and get in a little trouble if we want to achieve full equality. Will is one incredible young man!
BREAKING NEWS!!!! Jose
Peralta has won a huge victory in his race for the New York State
Senate. He will replace Hiram Monserrate, who broke his promise to
vote for marriage equality when the Senate took up the bill last
December. Jose Peralta has a solid voting record in the Assembly on
marriage equality, GENDA and the Dignity for All Students Act and will
now bring that record with him to the State Senate. We just took
another step closer to GLBT Equality in NYS!
Don't forget, this weekend is the GLBT EXPO at the Javits. Stop by, say hello!
Visit the Photo of the Month Archive where you can read a statement from the artist about each image and order prints.

"In The Stuppak Pits"
March 13th, 2010
The Oscars made me sick. Not because my George Clooney did not win and attended with that faux galpal arm-candy instead of me. Not because Kathryn Bigelow the first woman to win best director was so ditzily girly in such an historic moment. But because the tribute to horror films was an unrelenting filmic homage to violence against women. The wink wink nudge nudge "it's just a genre" disclaimer did not work for me, especially after news footage of the actual horrifics of femicide in Nigeria. A week later and I'm still sick to my stomach. It could be the Boniva my doctor prescribed to aid in the absorption of calcium. I took it just before I read the studies someone finally got around to doing........ continue reading

What was I thinking? The weather forecast for the Northwest was "partly cloudy, showers", generally a safe bet, so I wore a big black raincoat and layers for my trip to Seattle and Portland. Had I forgotten the daffodils during the Vancouver Olympics? Forsythia, flowering quince, blooming tulip trees and blindingly blue skies greeted my squinting, and grateful eyes for my Northwest sojourn. After a great lunch at Seattle's Wild Ginger with producer/activist Paul Bauer who had picked me up at SeaTac in his black El Camino, I had a quick nap. I woke up with a quick Starbucks double latte......... continue reading
