GREETINGS!

Pride may be over, but NYC is just getting geared up with an array of fabulous summer events. From Broadway in Bryant Park and Fresh Fruit Festival, to fantastically free concerts in the parks all over the City, from The Met to Donna Summer. It's never too early to pick out your choice restaurants for the two Summer Restaurant Weeks coming up. Also there's a new must-see show "The TEMPERAMENTALS" staring Michael Urie (Ugly Betty). There's a lot in this week's newsletter, but remember there's a lot more listed on the website.

Where did all the Rainbow flags go? Heritage of Pride is a mostly volunteer organization responsible for organizing and producing Gay Pride Week. HOP's efforts have helped to pour millions of dollars into the coffers of NYC. Yet the City continues to fall short on support.

A $1.9 million marketing campaign called, Rainbow Pilgrimage was launched in April by NYC & Co. (NYC's official marketing organization) to promote the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. It has turned out to be nothing more then self serving. Back on the 25th Anniversary, the 8th Ave Retailers Association proudly hung Rainbow flags from every the lamp post along 8th Ave. This year, the City wanted to charge the Retailers Association to have them hung. So instead of supporting grassroots organizations, a few Rainbow Pilgrimage flags were hung downtown with absolutely no mention of Stonewall. No one knew what the Rainbow Pilgrimage was, and the only contact HOP received from NYC & Co. was to ask for discount tickets for the Dance, which is the largest fundraising event for HOP Pride Week.

HOP continues to do all the work, and the City continues to collect all the money. The campaign was designed to capitalize on our 40-years of hard work and our fight to achieve fair, equitable and just treatment from city officials. Anyone who was at the 25th Anniversary can tell you that it was spectacular! The air was electrified, we had more then a half a million visitors, and it was mostly achieved by the sweat of HOP's army of volunteers.

Hopefully by the Golden, our 50th Anniversary of Stonewall, we will have achieved freedom and equality, and we'll look back at this time as ancient history...and we won't have to go looking for our Rainbow Flag.

In between all there is to do, take the time to give yourself a luxury treatment at XAC Anthony Salon and Spa, take advantage of the introductory discount offer (see coupon left).

"Gut Check"
June 23, 2009

When Dick Cheeeney was asked why he had not served in Vietnam, he harrumphed that he "had other priorities in the '60s than military service." Like applying for six deferments.

Side note: come to find out, the very long E in "Cheeeney" is the family's preferred pronunciation of their surname. The ubiquitous-as-homemade sin, Liz Cheeeney announced this top-secret fact on a morning show, and now Chris Matthews has dropped the long A in Chaney and cheeses out Cheeeney whenever he can. I just thought he was being sarcastic. I won't tell you how my household still says the name. Continue reading...
