(LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th St, New York, NY 10011) (6:30pm) A film screening and discussion with Richard Berkowitz, who tells his harrowing story of the embattled early days of the AIDS epidemic. As a gay hustler-turned-AIDS activist, Berkowitz vividly recalls the fight to save the lives of gay men by conceptualizing the precautions that would later be named "safe sex." As common and accepted as these practices are today, the notion that gay sex was unsafe ignited a firestorm of controversy among gay men of the time who railed against the homophobia of such an argument. He persevered in his quest to raise public awareness and partnered with musician Michael Callen to write the first safe sex manual for gay men (How to Have Sex in an Epidemic), an effort that earned them scorn for its call for condom use and an end to the promiscuity that spread AIDS.
